‘The Simpsons’ Writers Comment on 2020 Election with Season 32 Episodes

The famous yellow family is kicking off their 32nd season with serious guns drawn. No matter what shenanigans Bart Simpson may be in or if Homer suddenly gets another job, there will be commentary involved.

Although, for context, The Simpsons and their writers have been well aware of the 2020 election and problems it may cause well before season 32. Due to odd coincedences, the team behind the show had been known to ‘predict the future’ in a way, and in 2016 a specific instance came true from season 11:

To quote Lisa Simpson from the episode ‘Bart to the Future’, “As you know, we’ve inheritied quite the budget crunch from President Trump.” This sentence lead show runners to further poke fun in 2016 with the Bart Simpson writing on the chalkboard, being right sucks.

Now coming into another election, The Simpsons are not only hitting Trump with hard punches but politics as a whole. Starting in the third episode of the season, there is a cut-away gag that features a baby Bernie Sanders trying to tell other babies the economics of their lunch money before using his “Bernie Bros” and then claims that everyone has goons.

As we are in October, The Simpsons will soon debut their annual Treehouse of Horror episode. On October 12th, the official Simpsons twitter account showed a sneak peek of their episode. This sneak peek clip shows Homer rushing into a voting booth and struggling to vote for president. This leads to Lisa rushing in and telling him to think over the past 4 years. Across the entire screen begins to scroll all of the problematic and illegal things that President Trump has done across his presidency.

Reactions to this have been mixed. Many have pointed to the fact this is not the first time ‘The Simpsons’ have made fun of presidents or the election. Previous Treehouse of Horror episodes mentioned elections, and even voter fraud jokes in the past, and an entire episode was dedicated to the Simpson family living across the street from former president Bush. Others point to the fact that this may be a tactic to sway the election because this will air so close to Election Day, and should not be done for either side.

You can watch the new episodes of ‘The Simpsons’ on Sundays at 8PM EST, 5PM PST on FOX.
