10 Terrifying Movies to Watch this Halloween

It is officially October, which means spooky season is right around the corner! That also means, it’s time to cook up some popcorn, grab your favorite plaid blanket, and snuggle up on the couch to watch a scary movie. Whether you’re down to stay up all night to keep Michael Myers from killing you in your sleep or you want to be scarred for life from the terror that is The Blair Witch Project, then you’re in for a treat.

There are buckets of horror movies out there, so here is a list of some of my favorites. Some classic, some not so classic. Warning: Be prepared to be scared.

#10: The Strangers (2008)

A couple, played by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, returns home from a wedding reception when they receive a knock at the door in the middle of the night. They are terrorized by three masked strangers all night long while attempting to escape. And if that wasn’t bad enough, you’ll be reminded of this horrifying film every time you hear “Mama Tried” by Merle Haggard. Trust me. This violent ordeal was inspired by true events, which only makes it scarier.

#9: The Visit (2015)

You’ll be hugging your grandparents real tight after watching this thriller, or maybe not. Two siblings visit their grandparents after many years apart and become increasingly disturbed by their behavior. No spoilers here, just watch the movie. And remember grandma’s rules!

#8: It (2017)

What’s scarier than a killer clown that lives in the sewer? I’ll show you later in the list. Based on a Stephen King novel, It follows a group of young boys in 1989 who band together to take down Pennywise, a shape-shifting monster that changes into a terrifyingly creepy clown and abducts and kills children. You won’t stand too close to a storm drain ever again after watching this.

#7: Husk (2011)

After a flock of crows attack a car causing it to crash, a group of young friends search the nearby cornfield for their missing friend. While in the field, an intense series of events begins to take place that you won’t soon forget. Plus, the ending will leave you with chills. Be prepared to stay away from corn mazes forever.

#6: It Follows (2014)

Hear me out. This movie’s plot is a weird one. However, the things that follow you, absolutely bone-chilling. Whenever I think of a scary movie, I think of this one, which was an off-the-wall random movie that popped up in my local theater. I finally stopped being paranoid and looking over my shoulder a few years ago, but after researching this film, I am back at it. This is a psychological horror film in which a teenage girl named Jay is “tagged” which attaches a demon to her that follows her until it catches her. And when it catches you, oh boy.

#5: V/H/S/2 (2013)

After a student goes missing, two private investigators break into his house only to find a collection of VHS tapes. After reviewing the sinister contents of the tapes, they soon realize that there is something evil about the student’s disappearance. Watcher beware: gore, violence, suicide, and evil images are abundant. This one is not for the faint of heart.

#4: The Conjuring (2013)

This film is as creepy as they get, plus it’s actually inspired by a real-life couple that purchased a house that had unexplained paranormal activity. In this film, Ed and Lorraine Warren are paranormal investigators that attempt to help a family rid the terror of a dark presence in their home. Once your nightmares subside from this one, check out its’ sequel, The Conjuring 2.

#3: The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Nearing the end at #3, The Blair Witch Project will keep you from ever going camping again. I can’t even look at the woods anymore. Originally this movie came out in 1999 and people weren’t entirely sure if it was real or not. The film was advertised as “found” video footage (and it sure looks real). It follows the story of three film students who travel to a town in Maryland to film a documentary on the Blair Witch legend, except they never return, leaving behind video footage of their encounter.

#2: As Above, So Below (2014)

Do small, confined spaces terrify you? What about evil demons and satanic worship? Or how about both. This Netflix film will leave you gasping for air. Take a trip with Scarlett and her French friends into the haunted catacombs of Paris in the hopes of finding the Philosopher’s Stone, but instead finding the entrance to Hell.

#1: Insidious (2010)

Let me introduce you to the movie that gave me nightmares for years. This film filled with evil demons and possession will haunt your dreams and keep you awake for days. This film is the first of a series in which a young boy falls into a comatose state where he becomes possessed by demons. Filled with paranormal mystery and hauntings that will leave you feeling as though you’re always being watched.

And that completes my list of insanely terrifying thrillers that you need to watch this Halloween. Remember kids, avoid storm drains, cornfields, and the woods at all costs.
